Schuyler Fisk could well be the best kept secret in folk music at the moment - but it's hard to see how things can be kept under wraps much longer.
How's this for promotion:Daughter of actress Sissy Spacek and Hollywood production designer Jack Fisk, Schuyler (pronounced "Sky-ler") has acted alongside Jack Black and Colin Hanks in Orange County and appeared in One Tree Hill and Law & Order. Paperweight, her duet with Joshua Radin, appeared on the soundtrack of Zach Braff's 2006 movie The Last Kiss and she has also toured extensively with Radin as well as performing with Ben Taylor and OneRepublic's Tim Myers. Not bad exposure at all.
Singing from a young age, music and moving pictures quickly melded as, according to her bio, a video of her first song at the age of four shows. "There Was A Little Girl Named Schuyler", played on the ukulele, was the beginning of the journey.
Now 26, the California-born, Virginia-raised redhead pens gentle acoustic numbers balanced with sweet yet powerful vocals and looks set for success in front of the mic, or the camera, or both.
Biding her time and working toward her debut album, Fisk fans are left clinging to live shows and a nine-track demo EP in anticipation of the acclaim she well deserves. HT&E talked to Schuyler during the writing of her new record.
HT&E: Is it possible that you have the coolest name in music?
SF: Hahaha! Well I'm not sure about that. I mean....Bono, Butterfly Boucher, Madonna, Sia, Bela Fleck...those are pretty cool names. I have serious competition!
HT&E: Utterly honestly, what do you love most - music or acting? As Joshua Radin once said "You can never just be behind the camera".
SF: Well, utterly honestly, right now my heart is 150% deep into music. I do love acting and will never really give that up completely...but music is my number 1 right now.
HT&E: Your new album - excited, nervous or both?
SF: Both! But mostly excited! I'm just happy to finally be working on my full length record and so so so excited for people to be able to hear it!
"Bono, Madonna, Bela Fleck. Those are pretty cool names. I have serious competition!"
HT&E: Will you continue working with Joshua Radin in the future? Does he feature on the new album?
SF: Who knows what the future holds, but right now we are both working on our individual solo projects. I have a lot of respect for his music and I'm thrilled for his new record to come out.
HT&E: Celebrity moms. Good thing or bad thing?
SF: Ummm, honestly, celebrity or not, I just feel lucky to have a mom that I'm so close with and who has been so supportive, so loving, and so involved. I think it's hard to generalize a question like that because everyone's experience is different, ya know!? I feel lucky to have grown up with parents who were passionate about their careers and who always encouraged me to "follow my bliss." I have been blessed with the most amazing parents and I am so grateful for that everyday.
HT&E: How did you get involved in the Last Kiss soundtrack. How did you feel about it?
SF: I loved the soundtrack and was honored to be a part of it! I got involved with the soundtrack after Zach Braff heard my song Paperweight and asked me to record it so it could go on the soundtrack...it was kind of a no-brainer.
"Zach Braff heard my song "Paperweight" and asked me to record it so it could go on the soundtrack...it was kind of a no-brainer"
HT&E: "Hello". Great song, great lyrics. Are you still in touch with that muse?
SF: Ahhhh, thank you. Yes I am still in touch with that muse. Time does heal...(and the song helped too!)
HT&E: What do you expect from your debut album? How do you hope it will be received?
SF: I just hope people enjoy listening to it.
HT&E: If you could duet with any artist, who would it be?
SF: Whoa, um, anyone!? Patty Griffin, Bonnie Raitt, Sam Cooke, Ray Lamontagne. The list goes on and on...
HT&E: Finally, will we see "There was a little girl named Schuyler" on YouTube any time soon?
SF: Ooh, probably not. But, never say never!
